Kathmandu valley is the largest urban agglomerate city of Nepal and also capital city. It is located in the central area of the country, east
of the Himalaya Mountains and surrounded by high hills. Kathmandu is actually situated at 1400 meters, that’s lower than the mile high city.
The metropolitan city area is 50.67 square kilometers 19.56 sq mi and has a population density of 19,250 per km².
The weather in Kathmandu valley is a little different because the nepalese capital is surrounded by high mountain and the pollution is very heavy here. The summer months of Kathmandu are pretty hot and the temperatures may rise up to 30°C. In fact,
the weather in Kathmandu is such that the winter months may also reach 20°C. Snowfall is a rare thing in the Kathmandu valley. It can be rightly termed that the climate of Nepal differs with its topography. It may vary between sub-tropical to arctic based on the altitude. The Tarai area has a humid and hot climate. The mid land area are pleasant almost all year round. But then the winter months are generally cooler. The northern mountain area enjoys an alpine climate. Over and above, the temperature out here is considerably lower in the winter.
The monsoon of Kathmandu valley can be
grouped into two types namely dry season and clear wet season. The wet
days in summer are the monsoon days. Rainfalls generally result because
of the monsoon in summer. The remaining are the dry days. Autumn and
spring are in between these seasons. Generally speaking, the monsoon
starts from mid June and proceeds up to the beginning of September. The
change in season differs because of the slope and altitude of the
mountain. Higher altitudes and northern slopes are less warm when
compared with the lower altitude and southern slopes. The rainy season
is also based on the monsoon activities. Night rainfall makes the
following days fresh and clean. The length of autumn and summer is also
based on the monsoon. The northern area of the trans Himalayan zone is
an ideal option if you have a passion for trekking. Weather in Kathmandu
valley can be considered as a standard temperature.
Summer is generally the hottest season
and may last up to May and August in Kathmandu valley. Hot but at the
same time dry days are pretty comfortable when compared with the humid
and hot days of the monsoon.
Autumn starts at the end of monsoon and
lasts up till the beginning of November. In other words, this season
lasts from September to November. You can also term this as the festive
season as it gives you a chance to enjoy the blue sky and lots of green.
This is possibly the best season for outdoor activities such as
trekking, wild life jungle safari and trekking.
Winter begins from November and extends up to February. The chilled wintry days are also dry and come with a few rains. Winter receives scanty rainfall preferably because of the Mediterranean activities. Hence, the winter rainfall in the west Nepal receives more rain when compared with the eastern Nepal. Springs starts in February and extends till April in Kathmandu valley. This season starts with occasional rains and shower. The days are mild and this gives room for new vegetation.
